Let's enjoy our soccer
Those associated with football will no doubt understand this. In my opinion if you are not enjoying yourself at work, then it is time for a
change. Why should refereeing be any different?
As with all hobbies, the secret of making a good job of something is having fun. To me, refereeing is fun because I apply the laws of the game
without fear or favour and at the same time have a dialogue with the players I am trying to help to enjoy their football.
From the touch line it is never easy to differentiate between dissent at a decision and banter between player and officials. What appears to he
two people arguing may actually be two people ‘having a crack’.
Why has it got more difficult?
Unfortunately, it is my opinion that having this verbal banter has become harder over the last few months of last season and the start of this.
What is the reason? Is it the effects of the media interest in the World Cup where every decision came under the spotlight? Perhaps it is the need players seem to have to win every
decision, however unlikely, in order to save face with colleagues. managers and, dare I say, the press?
Still possible on the local parks
I have had many years in football, both as a player and manager in local football, followed by a career as a referee. In the latter occupation I
have seen a decline in the ability to communicate on the field at a higher level but, fortunately, local footballers have not forgotten what football is all about. It is about
having fun with mates whilst still remaining competitive. Perhaps League football can learn something from park football.
If there is good communication between players and officials, then decisions are more readily accepted, even wrong ones which we all make.
Players and officials alike.
